There is a difference between persistence and a preconceived notion. As fisherman we are taught to be persistent and patient particularly when they aren't cooperating, but sometimes I think we get the preconceived notion of what they are doing or should be and we don't adjust. We are just going through the motions. I just did it and paid the price with a zero in a fairly important tournament for me. I normally have a plan for each tournament day of what to do if this happens or that happens, but I was so convinced I was doing the right thing I didn't plan and just ended up going through the motions thinking the next spot would change my day. I didn't think through what was really going on and what to do next. I just kept flipping and not catching fish with no regards to what they were doing or even where they had gone. We had a major cold front and from everyone I talked to the fish moved out just a bit but enough that my boat was sitting on top of them and I was flipping into the void. So the moral of this story is to adjust and make changes, have a game plan and know what you are going to do if the day is just not working. Don't just go through the motions.
It is finally here! 3 days of 80 degree temps and a major tournament just launched at Beaver lake and they had snow at the ramp this morning. In two days it will be back in the 70's. this is spring. Water temps from the weekend in our area were in the mid to upper 50's and I am seeing more and more reports of big fish being caught shallow. Don't forget full moon is April 25 so they should be spawning that week. Keep your eyes open. Good luck and go catch a big'un.
My Favorite 5 Prespawn Bass Baits are:
1. Texas Rigged creature bait or lizard on a light weight
2. Senko or floating worm fished weightless very slowly
3. Jerkbait even after water warms up deflected or forcing a reaction
4. Spinnerbait for covering darker water to get fish to reveal themselves (Buzzbait works too at times)
5. Squarebill crankbait to cover water and drag along laydowns. Not sure why but they can't resist.
What are your favorites? Did I miss something you think I should add to the list. Hope you are getting out there and enjoying some of the great fishing going on right now.
Wow! Weekend forecast looks great and should be a great weekend to be in the water. Are you going this weekend and where? Water temps should be rising with the warmer days and maybe this is the end of the cold weather. Spawn should happen here in the midsouth soon. The next full moon will surely bring a lot of big ol' girls shallow. Good luck and send me some pics of them big ones you catch!
I am not a pro fisherman just Joe Average out here trying to enjoy the outdoors. I love to bass fish and love the competition of tournament fishing as well. Hope you find something within my sight that is entertaining or informative..
