Merry Christmas!! Winter has definitely set in now and water temps are below 50 degrees now. Bass have moved into their winter haunts and are moving a little slower but they are still feeding. Tournaments are still taking mid 20# sacks to win and high teen's to get a check. Slow down and if you catch one concentrate hard in that area to catch more fish. They are bunched up feeding on shad right now looking for that next meal.
I am amazed at how fast a year goes by. I can't believe it is already November and this year is essentially over.
I have made some new videos and added to the website and we have added a store in Bartlett for Primary Tackle. There is a lot more things coming in the near future and keep an eye out on this site and on primarytackle.com for new products and announcements. I took a year out of tournament fishing this year to concentrate on the business and I really missed fishing tournaments. I will be back at in 2018, not sure which one I will be fishing but hoping to fish some higher level tournaments in the upcoming year.
I hope to add videos on each of the lakes similar to the one posted on Tunica in our MS River section over the next year. I am also working to add new videos around lures and techniques as well. So keep checking back in with us and looking for new developments.
Water temps are now in the high 70's to low 80's and fish are moving to the ledges and deeper water area for the summer. Their will be a few stay shallow especially through the full moon and bream bedding and mayfly hatch. The end of the month they should be stacked in deeper water haunts and ledges making them more predictable and can be found using your electronics. Big crankbaits, jigs and swimbaits will become the rule of thumb soon. Just watch your electronics and look for big groups of fish stacked on the ledges and around cover.
2017 brings new challenges and commitments with the business of fishing being my full time job and pursuit. We are going to grow this website and plan to do more videos and informational content for our social media and this site. We will be helping to grow our partner businesses as well. I am going to pursuing new lines of business within Primary Tackle as well and growing that business and representing other fishing businesses throughout the Southeast. Keep checking into the site and message me if you have any questions.
This full moon we currently have will bring some of the big girls out to spawn. I know it is early in the spring but with water temps in the high 50's and low 60's on warmer days in the shallows some of the bigger females are going to spawn over the next few days with the current full moon. These fish tend to spawn a little deeper and it is a first go for them as the prepare for spring. Spawning several times in the spring is natures way of insuring that each year we get a good crop of new fish. That way if future spawns fail or are hampered the fish get a good opportunity to lay their eggs. So be aware and looking for signs of beds or bedding fish.
Chatterbaits and spinnerbaits are good search baits this time of year and if bites are kind of funny in an area, settle down and slow down with some baits the spawning fish may react to better. Look for swirls and signs of fish catching bream away from beds. Throw texas rigged lizards or wacky rigged senkos in the areas especially if you see cleared areas or swirls. Don't overthink things this time of year and just go out and enjoy it. Look for spawning areas and the banks and points fish will congregate on as they prepare to spawn or as they finish to rest. This can be a time of year that you will catch as many fish as anytime and numbers and size are the easiest to catch. Start looking shallow and concentrate on being ready!!
Hard to believe how fast this year is going!! I have fished 2 tournaments, done 3 shows, doing my 4th this weekend and feel like I have never landed. We have experienced a pretty mild spring from temps though we have had a lot of water and flooding and I expect to see fish on beds all over the midsouth soon. I fished Ross Barnett a couple of weeks ago and there were fish we definitely feel were beddin there already. It definitely happens this time of year if the conditions line up and high 50's water temps and a full moon will put those big sows on beds for sure. Keep your eyes peeled and I have seen some big fish being caught already this year. The next 2 months are many fishermans best shot at catching the fish of a lifetime so get out there and go fishing!! Tightlines
It's a new year with new possibilities, challenges, and pursuits. I am looking forward to this year and all the things on the horizon. We have made lots of goals and commitments and have a lot to do! I have committed to spend a few hours of every day growing this site and my business, Primary Tackle.
We are going to do an event every month and have moved into a new building in an existing business here in town. The goal is grow both of our businesses and start something new here in the Memphis area. I am also planning to do videos and updates on the major local lakes as well as some of the popular smaller ones. I am going to also expand our product selection on primarytackle.com as well in Gator Brown's here in Bartlett.
Thanks for your support in the past and I look forward to your support in the future.
It has been a busy year and lots of growth and changes in life. Didn't get to fish as much this year but felt more involved in fishing than I have in a long time. We did 8 shows across the mid-south area this year including the Forrest Wood Cup. I have grown Primary Tackle into a larger company but not without lots of growing pains which we are still experiencing. I have met lots of industry people and created some partnerships I hope to continue to grow. Got to meet and talk with Forrest Wood, a childhood hero, even and had a lot of fun meeting lots of new customers. We will continue to work in 2016 to grow the company by leaps and bounds and even have moved into a retail space. midsouthbassfishing.com will grow some this year as well with new information and hopefully include sponsors and advertisers as well. 2016 will be focusing on the business with a few tournaments for advertising hopefully smattered in there.
Looking at past water temps I have us figured at about a month behind the past few years. The full moon that past a week ago or so brought a few fish up shallow to spawn the last couple of years. Not this one! With temps just getting into the low 50's this week the next one will bring some of the biggest fish in to see if the conditions are right and we should start to see waves of fish move shallow in preparation for the spawn. They are beginning to stage on secondary points and move that direction so get prepared as the best fishing of the year is about to start. I am just happy to see the start of spring and I know it is here because my allergies tell me so. The daffodils are finally blooming and water temps have finally hit 50. Spring is here get out and take advantage of it! I am headed to Lake Fork next week and looking forward to a great trip and to tell you all about it.
I keep telling myself spring is coming. I fished Quachita in February with good results and weather yet ever since it has been cold and ice and bad weather. Tournaments are still mostly being won with A-rigs and Jigs on specific winter haunts for the bass and if you find them and grind it out can catch a good stringer but it is slow and work.
I am not a pro fisherman just Joe Average out here trying to enjoy the outdoors. I love to bass fish and love the competition of tournament fishing as well. Hope you find something within my sight that is entertaining or informative..
