Carolina Rig
The Carolina rig consists of a weight followed by a bead and swivel. A leader is then tied to the swivel and hook is tied there. This allows the bait to float or drag behind the weight at some varying distance. The length of the leader can vary based on the action wanted to be imparted on the bait. The longer the leader the more natural or fluttering the action will and the shorter can impart a more erratic action to the bait. The beauty of a carolina rig is it gives you a bottom bouncing presentation that you can cover and investigate water quickly with, making it a great search bait. It allows constant contact with the bottom transmitting what material is on the bottom as well what kind of cover may be there. Baits typically used on a carolina rig are creature baits and lizards most of the year and big worms or shad baits in the summer become a favorite of many anglers. Smaller fry type baits and floating baits are popular choices among many anglers as well.
There are also hybrids such as the petey rig which is a lightweight shorter rig using stoppers to adjust leader lengths mainly used around grass and shallower applications. I like this rig especially in fall on shallower flats for schooling fish etc. You can vary rigs leader lengths and line weights and can use in many applications you may not even consider from the shallow do nothing rigs to aggressive search bait applications, the sky is the limit. So be willing to experiment and see other ways that you can go use this rig the next time you go out.
This is a great technique for covering deeper water quickly as well as shallower water. Anytime you need to cover the bottom quickly and efficiently this is a great technique.
